The purchase of a certificate of indulgence was supposed to provide?
Prior to the Reformation, within the Roman Catholic church, the clergy was given the "spiritual right" to absolve sins. When a person wanted forgiveness for a particular sin, sometimes a person could purchase from a priest a certificate of sorts which was like a "get out of jail free" card in Monopoly games.

Some of the clergy felt this was unethical that a person could pay for sins with money, making light of their offenses. But this also put money into the coffers of the church, which made it a lucrative business.
