ex and i have split. she refuses to give me my car back. the vehicle was purchased while together, but is in my name and i have retained the insurance. also she has abused me, biting and punching. do i have to go to court to get my vehicle back? also her name was on my checking account and has written several checks that were nsf. who is accountable?

The car and the joint checking account are probably community property. Contact an attorney and get your divorce filed. The property issues can be a part of this matter.
