Question

I have been non-compliant with my child support due to a drug and alcohol problem. I have been sober now almost a year and am trying to get my life on track...I have enrolled in school and am working. They have been garnishing my checks. I recieved a "Rule to Show Cause" and am concerned they will try to put me in jail. Is that a real possibility if I am trying?

Answer

Yes a family court judge can put you in jail for non-compliance of a family court order, also known as contempt of court.

The rule to show cause should have a court date... Make sure not to miss it or you will get a bench warrant.

I suggest you consult with a family law attorney before that court date and consider having them represent you in the proceeding.
