How does sponsoring a non us citizen work and what's the risks if there are any?

If you are a U.S. citizen (or, in some cases, a Legal Permanent Resident), you can only "sponsor" a parent, child, spouse or sibling. I don't really see any "risks", other than you have to file an Affidavit of Support, promising that you will financially support the immigrant you petition for, so that they do not apply for any "means-tested" benefits.
