Question

I joined a health club and gave authorization to take the monthly payment from my credit card. The credit card was compromised and I was issued a new one, but didn't remember to contact this vendor with the new info. So instead of contacting me when the monthly transaction didn't go through, they charged my debit card based on a purchase I had made in the healt club. I did not give authorization to them for my debit card......can they legally do that?

Answer

Almost certainly not. You'll want to check to be sure you didn't actually authorize it. Sometimes buried in contracts are clauses that would allow such things.

In the end, however, there might not much point in fighting about it if you didn't suffer any adverse consequences.
