It's possible to buy one share of stock from a broker called One Share--people buy one share of stock so they can hang the stock certificate on the wall. Until the 1980s, a single share of Playboy Enterprises was the best gag gift you could give a bachelor. It was partly so the guy could say, "I own part of Playboy!" and partly because the certificate had a naked woman on it. These two combined to make Playboy the company with the largest number of single-share stockholders in the history of the NYSE by a factor of probably about a billion. Single-share stockholders are very expensive to service especially when there are so many, so Playboy bought up all the single shares and sent out special "I used to be a Playboy stockholder" certificates.


Incidentally, this company's in the three-dollar range so if you want some of it, a standard 100-share lot isn't going to break the bank.
