Question

My father passed without a will and is still legally married with my mother but they have been separated for the past 25+ years. My father owned a house that he purchased with his live-in girlfriend 22 years ago. They broke up 11 years ago and my father resided there until he died last week. He has 3 cars and 2 motorcycles that he owned that are parked in the yard. He had four children all from different women. I understand the house will go to the girlfriend who had her name listed on the deed. My question is who will have rights to the vehicles? The estranged wife, the adult children, or the previous girlfriend who owns the house in which the cars are parked?

Answer

First, you shouldn't assume that the girlfriend on the deed gets the house. That's not necessarily the case. In fact, it's probably unlikely that she gets the house in its entirety.

You probably need to contact an attorney. This could get interesting.
