Black powder deposits in exhaust are carbon molecules tha have not oxidized into carbon monoxide or carbon dioxide gas. This indicates insufficient oxygen in the combustion process, or more precisely, too much fuel in the air-fuel mix. This is commonly caused by worn out fuel injectors.
